Netscape Portal
Redesigned with AOL Stamp!
At long last after years of if and when will it happen, Netscape has finally been absorbed into the AOL - Time Warner Corporate Machine.
Netscape Screenshot

A few months ago it was a constant feed of interaction by participating followers of the Netscape dream with news feeds. But before then, the portal had commanded a massive following and had evolved in technology and

design over a course of time. I am just waiting to see what happens now to the old UK portal. That depicted the Netscape Classic colours. On a personal note it is a sad time and only one day will AOL and Time Warner, Oh sorry! 'Google' Cable and Communications (that's torn it, only joking) or maybe, worth watching the markets, last check TW (AOL) at $18.20?

Sadly, long gone are the day's now, from the sale of Netscape to AOL. But Netscape should of been preserved by AOL and Time Warner and retained it's identity as a modern day icon

and National treasure in the annuals of the Internet and human history. We will all look back in reflection one day, realising it should never of been extinguished and as a commercial viability. For I believe, had AOL dropped it's own brand over time and amalgamated it into Netscape it would be a monster company today and I don't honestly think you would of seen the likes of Google.

Another factor is, we are just around the corner for the World Wide Web age of Retro, believe me it's coming! So, so long old friend, many a night and day I spent going to the browser page but stopping off

Google and Double
Click Deal Row Continues!

Microsoft expresses concerns over the purchase and takeover of 'Double Click' by Google.

Double Click Screenshot

Microsoft expresses deep concern over Google takeover of On-line advertising network media company Double Click. Regrettably, it's the pot calling the kettle black with recent law suits by the European Union over Microsoft's breech of

anti trust laws. However, in defence of Microsoft they do have a point, but more web community members need to get into the argument. I am keen to see the development of the Internet, job creation and wealth. But what really concerns me is not necessarily Google's rapid growth, but along the way they are leaving a significant paper trail and not tidying up as they go in relation to their current on-line advertising ventures and search engine services. That are not addressing the constant and expanding problems of passing off, abuse and spam from search engine results and fraudulent advertisers, generating assimilated web pages. Using other web developers and webmasters content and hard work.

When Google first started out it was fashionable and cool as a search engine. But I fear with a possible recession looming in the good 'ole USA', the Google dream may implode leaving carnage and unemployment.

With the recent dressing up of AOL and using the Google search technology, with murmurs of Europe and Asia in sight for Google. Is AOL the next connectivity solution on the list? Or has the deal already been done behind closed doors. I think also on a personal note, Google has to address these points mentioned as of the utmost urgency and also it's ethical policies. With reference to some of the material being published in relation to bullying and complete brain dead opportunists with a total disregard for decency and human life, setting up these spoof face book and you tube obscene type of web sites.

If the two guy's that founded Google condone the company's current state and policies, well it's clearly the case of 'give me the money' and to hell regarding the rest!

All sites need to generate some form of revenue or even commercial interaction in the way of banner exchanges to give the guy or gal a chance of a dream, that's out there through their efforts and hard work. I find it unpalatable, when some one has taken the trouble and hard work to compile an article or project from research and dedication, only for someone to come along and snatch the intellectual property and place the pages on the web and run an adwords campaign with Google data mining technology picking up these fraudulent pages and listing them. At the end of the day however someone tries to paint the picture it's theft. This is happening all the time and when reported the matters are not being addressed or possibly by one or two individuals somewhere in the basement if the truth be known.
There's a word in business that normally spells success or failure. I think Google have reached that point of where they need to Consolidate! The concern also to me is, the same symptoms of when the dot.com era crashed. You had people investing from around the World, but didn't have a clue about the industry and invested because others were. The same is happening with Google and the value and share price is forever increasing, everyone wants a piece of the action with Google success, but again they don't know what they are investing in. Many of the new products being rolled out by Google are novel, but trends change and Google is at present, only a fashion accessory and statement. As we all know, fashions come and go. The world wide web is fast, slick, the business environment is therefore the same and a fashion in this industry can be out of style in just a matter of a few months and broken.
Microsoft's Internet Explorer 5 for example, burnt us all badly. Netscape 6 just couldn't compete and within a year the market share was halved in favour of Internet Explorer, when only a few months before Netscape Navigator commanded some 90% plus of the market users.

I personally do not want to wake up to the world of Google, eat, live and eat Google. Nor do I want to wake up to the World of Windows. But the areas and the technology developed thus far is remarkable, but it's time to tune and refine. Bringing back words like 'The Best' and renowned. There is room for everyone in their niche fields, or do we continue as we are and end in a World of greater chaos and a 'Jack of all trades masters of none.

Especially now with the environmental issues, the words best and renowned are more pertinent to prevent CO2 and material resources. Perhaps we need to develop more long term, a toaster or television for life? I know that's ridiculous, but we seem to have become a society of me, me, me and must have. There's an old saying in engineering, if it's working leave it. That's my advice to Google, leave alone and consolidate. Batten down the hatches and ride out the storm that's coming, if not within the USA, maybe from the Far East. Beware of men bringing gifts.

The model of measured development and achievement, retaining values and steady growth and still the World's market leader in the World Google has grown in, is Yahoo!

Fire Fox Reaches A Milestone With Over 400 Million Downloads!

In the mid to late 90's it was cool as a web designer, developer, webmaster or user to download Mozilla browser. It was very much a statement and status symbol to rebel against the big corporate sledge hammer of Microsoft and Internet Explorer at the time. But over the years, like a tree branching out and growing fully fledged leaves, we now see and enjoy the buds and bloom. Mozilla Foundations Fire Fox browser is now a by word in virtually every household. With collective development skills the browser grows stronger and better by the day. Versions for Linux, Windows and Mac can be enjoyed by all. It is a success story of some note and worth shouting about to the world and congratulations in order to all involved as Fire Fox celebrates over 400 million downloads. If you  are new to the web and just starting out, one of the best decisions to make is switch to Fire Fox as your default browser. It's like jumping into a Ferrari without the technical hicks, from a Citroen CV (I was going to say Ford Escort but didn't fancy a law suit). Good Luck! The Mystery Of The Mug And The Mouse Mat! - The continued saga episode four.

Netscape Mug

A couple of year's ago, sad as I am. I thought to myself I'll buy a few of those great mugs in

the Netscape store and at the same time a few mouse mats to really demonstrate how truly insane I am. But alas, the Netscape store appears to be no more? So putting on my Sherlock hat, pipe in my hand and a magnifying glass in the other. I went in search of the goods. Yes I did, before  you say it! I went on Ebay (you can buy anything on there, even a Country) but alas, all my dreams and hopes were dashed. So this is an appeal and SOS to all Netscape lovers. Do we know where all the stock has gone? I would genuinely like to hear back from anyone who knows where you can buy the items or locate the old stock. Thanks! - Next Month: The continuing saga of 'The Mug And The Mouse Mat' and a picture of the 'Mouse Mat' a real saucy little number!

This Month's Issue and Augusts will be in the Back Issue archives section. I am going to try and go through all my old files regarding content and images of past work and Newsletters, when I can find the time. Then start to include and rebuild the issues, but bear with me it will be a mammoth task going back through to 1994. Regards Alastair.
