Introduction

Welcome to the Imagescape project for academics of all ages. In this module I hope to provide some very informative tutorials and resources by way digital images and graphics that I have taken or created over many years for the advancement and dynamic creativity of the World Wide Web. Obviously graphics and images come under the banner of rich content media and at the start of the World Wide Web the creation of a web page was a major achievement. It is also worth bearing in mind, that we we restricted by colour and had to be extremely accurate to the actual sixe of an image to avoid delay, in the downloading of web pages with reference to modem connectivity and  bandwidth usage all of which I will cover in tutorials with examples.

Today, we are spoilt for choice, in the way of graphical software applications (authoring creativity tools), the speed from broadband and most importantly, 32 and 64bit technology, from our operating systems and hardware processing chips.

There are many different forms and styles of imagery required dependent upon your creation. Illustrations and novel icons or buttons that we see today was very much a theme between 1994 - 1996 of the web, but mainly as a result of limitations of modem connectivity and as mentioned before pix elation ranging from 16 colours to 256.

From around 1998 and onwards for a good few years with the release of Windows 98 and then Millennium, photographs came into the fore with design. Image manipulation was achieved with distortion, half-tones and the building of collages.

Around 2002 to 2003 when the industry brushed itself off from the .Com crash. Maintenance begun with many of the larger organizations and with the introduction of Macromedia flash and shock wave. With a new impetus and a generated feel good factor emerged.

Images again became a rich content medium to capture ones imagination and in a commercial sense, as an inducement vehicle to buy a product or service.

In the past few years we are seeing both graphical images and icons sharing the web with digital photography.

Better applications to delivery high quality presentation. To really achieve greatness in the Web authoring world is no mean feet.

It is not just a question of coming up with a creative idea?

  • But consideration also to suitability and taste based on the type of client you are creating the work for.

  • The size of images and rate of traffic, so as not to extinguish in one hour a clients bandwidth take up.

  • The name of the image file so it is not blocked or interpreted to be a threat to security.

  • The alternate text and title of the subject that the image is linking to in respect of an anchor and meeting World Wide Web Consortium standards.

  • Image format environments with the ability to defy the laws of software and operating systems.

All of these points discussed I will cover in more depth in a tutorial with examples. Eventually depending of when you pass through and see us here, Tutorials will be found in the related content section to the right of this web page and in the Web Guide. If you need help as a student or are a faculty staff member regarding a problem and require a solution or advice. Please use our free 'Ask Gecko' for a response.

The comments and issues raised helps us to compile articles that we describe as 'Topics of the Day'! So please feel free to use the 'Ask Gecko service' as often as you wish. It helps us as a starting block for an article or tutorial.
